"How to be an Oxford alum in just one week"

Once again, Oxford University is opening its doors to adult learners for six weeks from July 2 to August 12, 2017. As a participant in the Oxford Experience, you can study at Oxford for a week with no matriculation requirements or final exams.

Christ Church College cloister All you need are a willingness to learn, seven days of free time, and the cost of a one-week course: £1,490 or approximately US $1,947, which includes tuition, accommodation with private facilities, all meals (except on excursions), a final gala reception and dinner, and Wi-Fi.

What you'll study:

You can choose from more than 60 different courses in half a dozen subject areas:

Archaeology and early history
Art, music, houses, and gardens
Literature and creative writing
Modern history and philosophy
Natural and social sciences
And, last but not least, "lively social programme." (We're not quite sure what that means, but it sounds like fun.)

Examples of specific courses include "The Glory of Byzantium," "The 16th Century English Reformation," "Life in Georgian England," "Evelyn Waugh: Beyond Brideshead," "The Vikings," and "Pilgrimage in the Middle Ages."

Excursions:

In addition to classroom activities, you'll have opportunities visit stately homes, castles, museums, etc., and to tour the city of Oxford and Christ Church College itself. If you wish, you can wrap up each day with Evensong in the Christ Church Chapel, which is also the Oxford Cathedral.

But wait, there's more! During your free time in Oxford, you can go on riverside walks in Christ Church Meadow, boat on the Thames (known as the "Isis" in Oxford), and enjoy after-dinner pub walks, whisky tastings, Morris Dancers, special lectures, and wine and croquet in the Masters' Garden.

Room and board:

Barbara Gillam of BGPR tells us that "Passing under Christopher Wren's Tom Tower, dining in the magnificent Hall made famous by the Harry Potter films, and sipping Champagne in the golden light of a summer evening are very special. So is living in student accommodation that dates from the 18th to the 20th centuries and has housed such luminaries as W.H. Auden, William Gladstone, Anthony Eden, and Lewis Carroll."

Most rooms are singles, but the university does have a few twins for couples and friends traveling together. (Bathrooms have sinks, toilets, and showers.)

Ms. Gillam adds: "Three meals daily are included in the cost of the program: a full English breakfast, a buffet lunch, and a served 3-course dinner. Everyone dines together in the Great Hall, and on one night during the week, each participant is invted to dine on High Table, where wine is served with dinner."

When to enroll:

The registration deadline is May 1, 2017, but we advise enrolling promptly since courses fill up early.
