Longyearbyen PhotosFrom: Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen, Svalbard
Permafrost doesn't just make coffins and cadavers pop up where they aren't wanted: It also requires pilings or deep footings for buildings, and it makes special measures necessary for water, sewage, and other utilities. These pictures show water and sewer lines near the main road of Longyearbyen. The pipes are heated to keep them from freezing in winter, and they're above the ground to protect the permafrost. (The smaller photo shows an insulated utility tunnel at a road crossing.)
