Tetrapods in port of Civitavecchia

Antifer cubes in Port of Civitavecchia

In these two photos, you can see large concrete tetrapods (top) and antifer cubes along the Port of Civitavecchia's harbor breakwater.

Such "armor units" are designed to absorb the impact of waves, thereby minimizing erosion and storm damage. (When waves reach the breakwater, they flow into the gaps between the tetrapods or antifer cubes, and their energy is dispersed instead of being concentrated on a flat surface like a traditional seawall.)
