Austrian shopping hours

By law, most Austrian shops may be open only 66 hours a week. Legal shopping hours are normally 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. However, the hours in the table below are more typical.

Monday-Friday 8 or 9 a.m. - 6 p.m
In smaller towns and villages, shops may close for 1 to 3 hours at midday.
Saturday 8 or 9 a.m. - Noon or 1 p.m.
(Until 5 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month)
Sunday and holidays Closed

NOTES:

  • Airports and the larger railroad stations usually have shops where you can buy snacks, drinks, tobacco, and reading material after normal business hours.

  • Bakeries often open earlier than other shops, and supermarkets may stay open until the legal maximum of 7:30 p.m.

  • Shops in tourist areas often stay open later than normal and have longer weekend hours (including Sunday hours) during high season.
