Transportation

By train. Trains from Lübeck stop at the ferry terminal, the pier of Skandinavienkai, and the Strandbahnhof or beach station in the town center. View train connections in English by clicking the "International Guests" link at www.bahn.de and searching on "Luebeck" and "Travemuende." (Travel time is 20-40 minutes or a little longer, depending on the train.)

By bus. Stadtverkehr Lübeck buses 30, 31, and 40 run from Lübeck to a bus station next to the Strandbahnhof.

By ferry. Travemünde is served by TT-Line (from Trelleborg, Sweden), Nordö Link (Malmö), Finnlines (Helsinki and Malmö), and Stena Line (Liepāja, Latvia). German and foreign cruise ships also visit Travemünde during the Baltic cruising season.

By river boat. Könemann Schiffahrt runs a service on the River Trave between Lübeck and Travemünde from April through mid-October.

By air. See the "by air" section of our Lübeck transportation page.

By car. The A1 motorway runs northeast toward Travemünde from Lübeck. From Rostock, take the A20 to the A1; from Berlin or Hannover, take the A24 or A7 and connect to the A1 in Hamburg. Free and paid parking are available in several locations around town; look for the blue "P" signs.

Tourist information

photophotoTravemünde Tourism has detailed English-language information about Travemünde, including hotel and events listings. You can pick up brochures, buy a pocket-sized Stadtplan map, and get on-the-spot help with hotel bookings at the main Lübeck Welcome Center (see my Lübeck Tourist Information page) or the Travemünde tourist office on the Strandpromenade next to the beach.

If you're staying in Travemünde for any length of time, invest a few euros in Travemünde Rundum, a 104-page guide to cafés, restaurants, attractions, activities, and events. It's in German, but the most of the listings are easy to figure out even if you don't read Deutsch.
