The Hotel Casa Verardo Residenza d'Epoca is a gem in its class: The small boutique hotel occupies a 16th Century palazzo overlooking a canal in a quiet, off-the-beaten-path location not far from the Piazza San Marco.

One of the hotel's most charming features is the "Garden of the Column," a pretty courtyard where you can sit (and, if you wish, enjoy a drink) in good weather. The Casa Verardo also has a large formal drawing room upstairs on the piano nobile, plus a terrace overlooking the canal alongside the hotel.

Room types range from singles, doubles, and triples to two- and four-person junior suites. (Some rooms are in a well-appointed annex a few minutes from the main building.)

How to reach the Hotel Casa Verardo from the airport-boat pier at San Zaccaria:

The Alilaguna Linea Blu (Blue Line) airport boat arrives at the "C" and "D" platforms of the San Zaccaria waterbus stop, which is also used by ACTV public vaporetti. Here's how to reach the Casa Verardo Hotel from the boat pier:

1. As you leave the waterbus station, bear left toward the stone pedestrian bridge.

2. Cross the bridge and continue to the second street that goes inland, the Calle degli Albanesi.

3. Turn right into the Calle degli Albanesi and walk straight ahead until the street feeds into a small square with a newsstand and souvenir stalls.

4. Cross the square, angling slightly to the right and into the street ahead of you (the Calle della Chiesa).

5. Continue walking on the Calle della Chiesa. You'll soon reach a small footbridge. Cross the bridge to the Casa Verardo Hotel, which will be facing you.
