Paris is a city with 20 arrondissements or districts. We've ignored many of them in this article for a simple reason: As a a leisure traveler, you're no more likely to stay in the 14th or the 19th than you'd stay in Washington Heights or the Bronx on a visit to New York. Being near the major sights (or in Montmartre, which is one of the major sights) just makes more sense touristically.

Still, if you have a good reason to stay away from the prime tourist areas (e.g., because you're leaving early for Venice from the Gare de Paris-Bercy or have a sports tournament in an outlying neighborhood), we wouldn't want to discourage you. Most Paris districts are safe and within commuting distance of tourist areas by public transportation.

Hotels in the Paris suburbs

You probably won't be staying in the suburbs unless you're in Paris on business, are visiting friends, or are touring Versailles or Disneyland Paris. (Note: Both Versailles and Disneyland Paris are easy to reach by train, so another option is to stay in Paris and make day trips from the city, as most people do.
