Lazzaretto NuovoFrom: Venice Waterbus Stops Lazzaretto Nuovo is a small island across from Sant'Erasmo, in the Venetian Lagoon. In the 1500s, it served as a quarantine island for ships arriving in Venice, where crews and passengers were detained and watched for signs of plague. Later, plague victims from Venice were taken to the island, and those who died were buried in mass graves. (See Atlas Obscura and and Italy Heaven articles.)
